Mark Anderson is the Vice President and Director of Historic Preservation at FacadeMD Architecture and Engineering PC. Mark has worked at FacadeMD for nearly 30 years. With a main office in Manhattan and a satellite office in New Orleans, FacadeMD has designed preservation projects for the exterior of many of the East Coasts historic buildings.
Mark has been the team leader of many of the firms most prestigious and challenging projects. Projects include the recent façade and roof restoration project on the Woolworth Building and the Conversion of the Woolworth Tower, which was converted to residences.
Mark takes much pride in the restoration of 90 West Street, where the copper roof, terra cotta façade and granite base, and windows were restored after the events of 9-11. This project won a National Trust for Historic Preservation Award, the Lucy G. Moses Award and the Victorian Society Award and was featured in the National Trust Magazine and Traditional Building Magazine.
Mark was also involved in the Restoration of the Ritz Carlton in New Orleans after Katrina, the Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta after the effects of a tornado and the complete recladding of 2 Fifth Avenue in New York City’s Greenwich Village Historic District.
Another successful project Mark recently completed was the structural rehabilitation of the Norwalk Maritime Aquarium in Connecticut Shark Tank. Some of the unique requirements for this project was that the specified repair products needed to be verified that they would not harm the sharks, while work was performed by divers who worked with the sharks remaining in the tank, during normal business hours.
Other projects of note are the restoration of Tiffany Stained Glass Windows and Historic Plaster Restoration of Gould Memorial Library in the Bronx and the Second Church of Christ, Scientist in Manhattan.
Mark has been the Chapter Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of AIA New York State. Mark has given talks about restoration projects across the country and in Mexico. He is also on the board of directors of the Association of Preservation Technology – Northeast Chapter.
Mark is civically engaged in his community, where he is the President of the Westerleigh Improvement Society, one of the oldest and most respected civic groups in the City, which was established in 1893. Mark has also been the Director of the Historic District Committee and the creator of the Westerleigh Talks – which is a monthly exploration of the uniqueness of Westerleigh.
Mark takes pride in living in and caring for one of the Westerleigh’s oldest homes, and has taken on the task of replacing the original 125 year old slate roof, with a new one himself. It was important for Mark to not only design it to new standards, but build it, to truly understand how this unique material works. AIA’s motto “Design Matters” is at work in the new roof, where Mark has added authentic period detailing, which has inspired his neighbors of a higher level of care and design.
