The American Institute of Architects, founded in 1857, is dedicated to serving its members, advancing their value, and improving the quality of the built environment. AIA members adhere to a Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct that assures clients, the public and colleagues of their dedication to high standards in professional practice.
The Staten Island Chapter of the American Institute of Architects was founded in 1945 and remains a professional group of individuals dedicated to the advancement of Architecture through education and practice of good design and building standards.
The AIA is a three-tiered membership organization representing architects at the local, state, and national levels. Consequently, full members residing in the U.S. are members of the national, state, and local organizations of the AIA. The American Institute of Architects represents nearly 80,000 members through its office in Washington, DC

Additionally, Unlicensed persons outside the architecture profession are considered for:
- General Allied Members (GA)
