The American Institute of Architects Staten Island Chapter (AIASI) would like to recognize the recent events in Minneapolis which, in turn, has drawn national attention. AIASI formally announces our support of the statement issued by AIA New York State President Joseph J. Aliotta, FAIA. We feel that Mr. Aliotta’s statement addressed the situation with respect to all parties and, without political bias. On June 18, 2020 the General Membership meeting of AIASI discussed the topic and, by vote of members present unanimously agreed to support our AIA New York State President.
Below is the statement by AIA New York State President Joseph J. Aliotta, FAIA.
Dear AIA New York State Members,
Sadly, we have been reminded of the impact of racism by the recent events in Minneapolis and other locations that have laid bare the inequities of our relationships with the institutions in our country.
AIA New York State stands united against social injustice and racial inequality. Our responsibility as architects is to protect the health, safety and welfare of the communities we serve. We must also find the courage to challenge racism and fight systemic bias and bigotry through action.
I call on all AIA New York State members to be part of a community that peacefully unites through shared goals of understanding, inclusion, and justice. Together we strive to build a better, stronger and more equitable place of social and economic prosperity — today and for generations to come.
Now is not a time to be silent; it is a time to act. We have been faced with some very uncertain times. This organization will continue to do the work, standing by its mission to support policies that promote prosperous, healthy and livable communities — places where housing, retail, schools and employment are accessible to all. AIA New York State urges your continued action and interaction. Get engaged and help to make this a season of renewal through advocacy, increasing our diversity in knowledge and leadership.
Joseph J. Aliotta, FAIA
